Best Buddies
Do you enjoying hanging out with the best? Then join Best Buddies! This group is a non-for-profit international program that enhances the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities by promoting one-to-one friendships. Students with disabilities (Buddies) are paired up with students without disabilities (Peer Buddies and Associate Buddies) and friendships develop through SHS-sponsored events and outside of school hang outs.
Commitment
This club commitment includes:
- Club meetings before school every other Monday
- Club events after school every other Monday
- Weekly contacts between Buddy Friends
- Full year commitment- mandatory attendance at all meetings and events
Requirements
To be a Peer Buddy or Associate Buddy, you need to have a desire to work with others who have intellectual disabilities. Previous experience working with individuals with disabilities is preferred but not required.
Join
There is a formal application and interview process in late August/early September of each year. Each applicant must attend a required information meeting prior to submitting their application and interviewing. Additional information regarding this process is advertised the first few weeks of the school year. Contact a sponsor for more information and to learn about meeting times/location, or visit Student Activities with questions.
Membership
Membership is dependent upon the number of students with disabilities that choose to participate in the club. The size of the club is limited in order to ensure an enjoyable and functional environment for our Buddies.
