PepeJon Chavez guided the Patriots to the 2019 IHSA Class 4A supersectional, the program’s deepest advance into postseason play. Stevenson finished the year with a 22-2-2 record and winning its first sectional championship. The 22 wins were the most victories in school history. The Patriots also captured their second straight regional title as well as the North Suburban Conference crown. Stevenson did not give up a goal in its seven conference games.
Chavez also leads the boys soccer program at Stevenson. He was promoted to head coach in December 2019.
Before joining the Stevenson coaching staff in 2010, Chavez led the women’s and men’s soccer programs at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minn., for three seasons. He spent 10 years as a coach at the NCAA Division III school after playing for there for two seasons.
Chavez guided the Bethel women’s team to a 28-20-6 record in three seasons from 2007-09, while the men were 19-33-2 during the same time. As a player for the Royals in 2001 and 2002, Chavez had two of the most prolific seasons in school history. He was named the most valuable player of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 2002, the first Bethel men’s soccer player to earn the honor. He was a two-time all-MIAC selection and finished his two-year career as the fifth-leading scorer in school history with 20 goals and 15 assists.
He moved to the Chicago area in 2010 and joined Stevenson’s soccer program as a volunteer coach. In 2014, he was elevated to a paid assistant varsity coach for the girls’ team. During his seven season with the Patriot girls, SHS has won two regional championships and one North Suburban Conference title. Chavez also was on the coaching staff when the Patriot boys placed fourth in the state in 2012.
Chavez has owned and operated his own soccer academy for nearly 16 years, and has developed a number of collegiate and professional soccer players. He also has served as a staff instructor for the past five years in the Olympic Development Program of the Illinois Youth Soccer Association.
