National Honor Society
The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to recognize those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Stevenson’s National Honor Society chapter activities include fundraising, charitable activities, and service to the school and community.
Eligibility Requirements
By early February of sophomore or junior year, invitations to apply to NHS will be emailed to eligible students (those who have maintained a 3.9000 weighted cumulative grade-point average or higher). If students wish to accept the invitation and be inducted, they must submit evidence of the following:
1. Completion of 1-3 service experiences with adult verification that meet the following criteria:
- Service activities are done on behalf of others (not including immediate family members).
- No compensation - grade, class credit, monetary or other - has been given.
- Service activities must be done outside the school day or during unscheduled time.
- The primary intent of the activity is to aid and assist others for the good of the community.
On the application, for each experience, students must show evidence that the experience was recurring (not one day). In a written reflection, students will respond to a prompt (or prompts) and discuss how each experience was meaningful.
2. Completion of 1-3 leadership experiences with adult verification that meet the following criteria:
- The activity placed the student in a position of special responsibility (committee head, directing or planning an event, etc.)
- The role required the student to facilitate effective communication between individuals and/or groups.
- The role required the student and his/her group to set a goal and create an action plan to achieve it.
On the application, for each experience, students must show evidence that the experience was recurring (not one day). In a written reflection, students will respond to a prompt (or prompts) and discuss how each experience was meaningful.
3. Successful evaluation of the student’s character through an analysis of the student’s disciplinary record.
Through this process, we ensure that students exhibit exemplary scholarship, service, leadership and character. These four elements are the pillars of the National Honor Society as set forth by the NHS National Constitution.
