Earth Week 2024
Earth Week is an opportunity to celebrate our planet and help students become aware of what they can do individually and collectively to care for it. Throughout the week, there will be various service and educational opportunities that align with the Earth Day 2024 organization’s sustainability campaigns. These events will be hosted by the SHS Green Team as well as Horticulture Club, Earth Science Club, Chemistry Club, Physics Club, National Art Honor Society, local conservation organizations, and more.
Use the hashtags #shsearthweek or #investinourplanet, or tag @shs.greenteam on Instagram to show how you are taking action this Earth Week!

Saturday, April 20 -- Earth Week Kickoff
- OFFSITE Road Cleanup in Long Grove, hosted by Long Grove Parks Department | 10 a.m. - 12 p.m (meet at Water Pump House Station Parking Lot off N. Krueger Rd.)

- We will be working with local residents to clean up the main road. They will provide gloves and bags for us.

Sunday, April 21 -- Earth Week Kickoff
- OFFSITE Habitat Restoration Project at Ryerson Conservation Area, hosted by Lake County Forest Preserves | 9 a.m. - 12 p.m (meet at Brushwood parking lot)
- We will be working with the site stewards to clear out invasive species and do some spring planting. They will provide gloves and tools for us. Bring your own water!

Monday, April 22 -- EARTH DAY
- Morning Activity: Earthy Day Chalk Art, hosted by Green Team | 7:30 - 8:15 a.m. at The Point and PWC
- Lunch Activity: Share Your Eco-Commitment! hosted by Green Team | Periods 4 - 6 in the Wood Commons
- Write an eco-commitment to share ideas on how you can reduce your carbon footprint OR take the climate pledge and do your part in creating a more sustainable future. Get an Oreo for your participation - yes, they’re vegan!
- Lunch Activity: Clothing Swap Drop-Off, hosted by Green Team | Periods 4 - 6 in the Wood Commons
- Got leftover dress shirts from prom? A retired skirt from your middle school days? Reduce your clothing waste by going thrifty! Green Team is hosting a clothing swap for the community on Thursday 4/24. For each donated item leading up to the event, you will be given a ticket in which you can redeem at the event.
- ALL donated clothing must be washed and free of holes or tears. School apparel encouraged. NO swimsuits, undergarments, or socks.
Enjoy showings of environmentally focused films such as Wall-E, the Lorax, and the Plastic Bag as you eat your lunch.
- Make Your Own Vegan Soap, hosted by Green Team and Chemistry Club | 3:45 - 5 p.m. in Room 8066
- We will be making environmentally-friendly, vegan soap in the lab that you will be able to bring home with you!

Wednesday, April 24 -- Walk 'n Roll Wednesday
- Lunch Activity: Transportation Trivia, hosted by Green Team | Periods 4 - 6 in the Wood Commons
- Answer questions regarding sustainable transportation to win some candy!
- OFFSITE Habitat Restoration Project at Westfork Savanna, hosted by Green Team, Horticulture Club, Earth Science Club and Lake Forest Open Lands Association | 3:45 - 5:30 p.m (meet at Sportscenter at 3:45 p.m.)

Thursday, April 25 -- Thrifty Thursday
- Lunch Activity: Fast Fashion Survey, hosted by Green Team | Periods 4 - 6 in the Wood Commons
- Visit the table to learn about fast fashion. Complete the survey to receive one “Clothing Swap” ticket - to be redeemed after school.
- Alternatively, you can donate items at the table and receive tickets then as well.

- After school, the doors will be opened for students/staff/faculty to come and shop around. Each item will cost only 1 ticket!
- Any items left after the event will be donated to Goodwill Industries International Inc. or recycled through SWALCO’s textile program.
Friday, April 26 -- Flora Friday
- Lunch Activity: DIY Seed Ball, hosted by Green Team | Periods 4 - 6 in the Wood Commons
- Come craft with us and support native plant species! You will get to learn about guerilla gardening and take home a few seed balls to throw.
- Note: these should only be used in your own yard, not public or other private spaces. Areas with minimal disturbance, and no other prolific plants, will see the best results.

- Check out the biodiversity of some of the beautiful plants grown in our SHS Greenhouse. Let us know which one is your favorite! Seeds for various produce and/or wildflower pollinators will be available to take from our seed library.

- Did you know that SHS has a state-of-the-art green roof that features native plants? Did you also know that some veggies grown in the courtyards are used in our cafeterias? Come close out Earth Week by learning about sustainable food practices and touring our facilities!

About the Clubs
Chemistry Club
The Stevenson Chemistry Club aims to teach students chemistry at an advanced level and prepare them to compete in the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad. Students participate in problem solving activities and labs weekly. All students are welcome – anyone from beginners to experts.
Earth Science Club
Earth Science Club welcomes all students eager to delve into the wonders of Earth Science. Members actively participate in engaging experiments and research, exploring captivating subjects such as Geology, Hydrology, Meteorology and Astronomy. Their collective journey will involve preparing for competitions including US Earth Science Organization's National Open Exam, the National Ocean Sciences Bowl, and the Envirothon. Students also embrace hands-on activities and trivia games, fostering dynamic and enriching environment for everyone involved.
Garden/Horticulture Club
Garden and Horticulture Club members will learn about gardening, plants and healthy eating. Members will perform science experiments to learn about plants and plant diversity, grow their own plants and engage in fresh food preparation. Everyone is welcome to learn about plants and explore the new greenhouse and green roof in the East building. Help make Stevenson a community with a focus on beautiful gardens and sustainable gardening practices.
Green Team
Green Team is a student run club which looks to promote a “greener” way of life for the Stevenson community. Students meet weekly to plan events that will make Stevenson and the Lincolnshire community more environmentally aware and friendly.
Physics Club
Physics Club competes in various physics-related activities and competitions on a club and national level. Examples of national competitions are the Bridge Building Contest, Rube Goldberg Contest and Physics Bowl.
