Fine Arts Events
At Stevenson High School, we believe it is vital that we provide experiences to students that will instill a life-long love for, appreciation of, and involvement in the arts. Through our curricular and co-curricular offerings, students have the opportunity to explore many disciplines of the arts and, in doing so, build not just their skills and proficiency in that art but their passion for it as well. Students also have the opportunity to showcase their skills through a variety of performances throughout the year. We invite our school community to join us in celebrating our talented students and the importance of fine arts through these events, listed below.

2024 Fall Play: Anon(ymous)
May 16, 2024
Stevenson High School | Little Theatre (Room 4200)
Separated from his mother, a young refugee named Anon embarks on a perilous journey across the United States, encountering a diverse array of characters-some compassionate, others dangerously cruel. From a sinister one-eyed butcher to charming barflies and a special curry restaurant, Anon must navigate an unpredictable, ever-changing landscape to reunite with his family. "Anon(ymous)," commissioned by the Children's Theatre Company of Minneapolis and written in 2006 by Japanese-American playwright Naomi Iizuka, reimagines Homer's The Odyssey through the eyes of a modern-day refugee. The play explores serious themes as our young hero makes life-altering decisions-some lives are saved, while others are lost. With its captivating blend of magical realism and ensemble storytelling, "Anon(ymous)" resonates with our shared human quest for belonging and how we are shaped along the way.
*Patriot Theatre Company advises Anon(ymous) has mature content due to moments of discrimination and violence. This production runs approximately 90 minutes with no intermission and utilizes moments of flashing lights, lights directed at the audience, and a6 6tmospheric fog.

The One Acts: Find My Way
May 3 & 4, 2024
Stevenson High School | West Auditorium
The Patriot Theatre Company proudly presents our annual evening of student-written and student-produced One Acts. Though these six short plays were born from mere whiffs of inspiration over the last year, they represent a lifetime of lived experiences. They were nurtured in workshops through our Scripts Studio club, drafted countless times, and finally selected from over 20 works submitted early December. Then, the real work began to refine their story to create highly engaging experiences for the audience. These plays offer a mirror to our present complicated world and a window into what is possible when students are given the leeway to create and collaborate with their peers. These plays are hilarious, touching, and above all else-honest depictions of what it means to really see the world through fresh and talented eyes. We look forward to you joining us!

Frosh/Soph Play -- Marian, or the True Tale of Robin Hood: Teen Edition
Feb. 1 - 3, 2024
Stevenson High School | Performing Arts Center
Hear ye, hear ye! All of Stevenson Institute of Learning is formally invited to attend this year's freshman/sophomore play, Marian, or the True Tale of Robin Hood. Join in our merriment and witness the work of over 50 underclassmen.
Hailed as "A gender-bending, patriarchy-smashing, hilarious new take on the classic tale," Marian provides as much comedy as it does heart. This swashbuckling adventure has hilarious fight choreography, slapstick comedy, and many surprises along the way. Robin Hood is (and always has been) Maid Marian in disguise, and leads a motley group of Merry Men (few of whom are actually men) against the greedy Prince John. As the poor get poorer and the rich get richer, who will stand for the vulnerable if not Robin? What is the cost of revealing your true self in a time of trouble? Modern concerns and romantic entanglements clash on the battlefield and on the ramparts of Nottingham Castle in this play about selfishness, selflessness, love deferred and the fight. Always the fight. The fight must go on.

Through Feb. 23, 2024
Stevenson High School | Visiting Artist Gallery
The Fine Arts Division is proud to feature Christian Arrecis in the 2023-2024 Visiting Artist Series.
Ms. Hurley is a Chicago based installation artist with a background in scenic design. Her work, inspired by the seemingly eternal and awe-inspiring patterns found in nature, allows her to explore the beauty, fragility, and interconnectedness of the natural world and our responsibility towards it. She creates installations, sculptures, and fine art utilizing clean contemporary lines to honor the beauty and diversity of the natural world. She works in corporate, commercial, public and residential spaces.
Ms. Taylor is a professional Artist and Designer that works with a variety of mediums in wide range of styles. Her artistic abilities, work ethic, attention to detail and craftsmanship are consistent and easily seen in every project, big or small. Shayne often employs muted colors to whimsical illustrations with an art nouveau sensibility; but she not afraid to use vibrant colors to evoke an exaggerated reality.
The Visiting Artist Program connects Stevenson students to professional visual artists through gallery exhibits and artist presentations. Created over 20 years ago by Stevenson emeritus faculty member, John DePinto, the Visiting Artist Program aims to feature a range of diverse artists, styles, and mediums throughout the school year. Annually, six artists exhibit for 6-7 weeks in the Visiting Artist Gallery. During the course of their exhibition, each artist visits two visual arts classrooms for an ARTalk, discussing their work, concepts, and process. The Visiting Artist Program and ARTalks are presented in partnership with the Stevenson Foundation.

Hey, have you heard about SPARK? No, not the internship - the play!
Just picture - Shakespeare's Julius Caesar meets Mean Girls. The play is so relatable - it's set in a highly competitive high school where the pressure of colleges is REAL. SPARK follows Kaashvi, an anxious-Davey-Vishwakumar-esk girl who wants to take down and destroy Priyanka, the president of the peer leadership program called SPARK. There's comedy, there's parties, puking, rivalries, manipulation, neon, backstabbing, and possibly even death?!?!?!
And now, a quote from the play: "I think a little bit of all of us wants to be Regina George.

Cristal Sabbagh’s interdisciplinary practice includes traditional portraiture, ceramics, and performance. Her practice looks outward to portraits of the world around, taking the forms of traditionally drawn portraits, figurative ceramic sculptures, and nontraditional portraits on ceramic mugs. Sabbagh labors over each piece, that act as homage and memorials and are a resistance to white-supremacy. Not only do these works infuse the user’s everyday coffee and tea rituals, but their ceramic forms will stand the test of time, potentially outliving the user by thousands of years and leaving traces of how we lived recorded by Sabbagh’s hand. The audience interacted with the actors through optional virtual breakout rooms and audience polls.
At the center of "The Compass" was a trial, determining the fate of a teenager who used an app to make a life-altering decision. In this play, every show ended differently, depending on what the audience decided as the jury. The audience joined us as we navigated the question: When someone else, or something else, tells you what to do, what exactly are you responsible for?
This play was recommended for mature audiences only, as it confronted such issues as racism and school violence.
