Tom Wood, a 1998 Stevenson graduate, was named head coach in February 2016, succeeding his father Jim, who held the post for 14 years. Wood guided the Patriots to the Blackhawk Cup state championship game in 2018, where they finished second. Three players have earned all-state honors during his tenure. He earned Scholastic Hockey League Coach of the Year honors in the 2017-18 season.
Wood has been involved in the SHS hockey program for more than 20 years as a player and coach. He played on the SHS varsity for two seasons, earning all-state honors during the 1997-98 season, his senior year. He went on to play at the University of Arizona. After college, Wood returned to the Chicago area and became an assistant coach in 2002 when his father was elevated to head coach. During his time as an assistant, Wood concentrated on defense and special teams.
Jim Wood built Stevenson into one of the Chicago area’s top hockey programs during his tenure. The Patriots won two Metro North playoff championships and two Chicago Metropolitan Scholastic Cup titles, and also reached the Elite Eight in the state tournament seven times. The elder Wood coached 16 all-state players.
