Amid the loss and grief that many have felt during the last two years, there is also hope and joy, sometimes in the most unusual places. For some, it’s the happiness found in a new hobby. For others, it’s reimagining new ways of connecting with loved ones. For Megan Han, a junior at Stevenson, it was podcasts.

Inspired by Ologies with Alie Ward, Megan launched her very own podcast, Lunch Break, where she invites faculty to share about their personal journeys as teachers.

“Virtual classes really changed the way that I connected with both my peers and teachers. Through this podcast, I’m hoping to restore some of the sense of community we lost during the pandemic.”

Just a few months into launching the podcast, Megan has proven to be adept in the art of interviewing. And the conversations so far have only further energized her to get to know even more teachers in new and interesting ways.

“One of the biggest surprises I’ve learned was during my first episode with Dr. Stephen Heller, who told me the story of his whole career. He didn’t just start out straight away as an English teacher. He was a swim coach in Alaska at one point and also worked with troubled youth before starting his teaching career.”

Megan has released five episodes and plans to release more in the future. She hopes that the podcast shows others how simple conversations can lead to deeper connections, empathy and appreciation for others, if we would just take the chance.

“Each person is unique and it takes time to get to truly know each person. There’s more to a person’s story than what is sitting behind a screen.”
