Stevenson placed sixth at the 35th annual Science Olympiad National Tournament on June 1 at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., matching the highest finish in school history. SHS also finished sixth in 2016.

The Patriots qualified by winning the Illinois Science Olympiad title this year, securing the school’s 11th consecutive appearance at the national tournament.

Eight Patriots earned medals in New York, competing in 23 events connected to several scientific disciplines, including earth science, biology, chemistry, physics and engineering. Leading the way for Stevenson were juniors Emily W. Liu and Sneha Mohan, who won the Boomilever event.

The Boomilever event called on competitors to design and build a wooden structure that could be attached to a wall and bear the most weight. By winning the event, each student will receive a $1,000 scholarship to the college of their choice.

Stevenson’s other place-winners were:

  • Senior Anna Wang and junior Jared Machtinger, fourth in Dynamic Planet
  • Senior Erin Yuan and 2019 graduate Kitty Zeng, fifth in Write It Do It
  • Senior Richard Yin and 2019 graduate Josey Zhang, sixth in Chemistry Lab
  • Senior Shannon Kang and 2019 graduates Andrew Ding and Josey Zhang, sixth in Protein Modeling

Also competing for SHS were seniors Eric Gan, Andrew Lee, Radha Patel and Roy Zhou; juniors Richard Bi, Hannah Liu and Krishna Patel; sophomore Greycen Ren; and 2019 graduate Tony Tan.

Stevenson’s Illinois Science Olympiad championship in April was the fourth in program history. SHS also won state titles in 2013, 2015 and 2016.

One of Stevenson’s sender schools, Daniel Wright Junior High in Lincolnshire, finished fifth in the national middle school competition.
