Stevenson High School has chosen an alumna and former state champion to lead its girls tennis program. Alexxis Kiven, a 2014 SHS graduate, will replace Angela Muresan, who stepped down after one year at the helm.

Kiven paired with Kendall Kirsch to win the Illinois High School Association doubles championship in 2013, the first state doubles title in program history and the cap to a 33-1 season. The pair finished third in the state two years earlier. Kiven also placed fourth with Kaylin Dong in 2012. Kiven was a four-year member of the Patriot girls tennis program.

After graduating from Stevenson, Kiven played tennis for Dartmouth University, where she graduated with a major in government and a minor in education and psychology. In three seasons with the Big Green, she compiled a 24-20 record in doubles and 3-1 in singles. Dartmouth won the Ivy League championship in 2017 and was conference tournament champions in 2015 and 2017. The Big Green also advanced to the NCAA team championship in those two years.

In her final season at Dartmouth, Kiven coached the Dartmouth club tennis team. She served as volunteer assistant coach for the men’s tennis team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2019.

“I couldn’t be more impressed with Alexxis and her vision for the Stevenson girls tennis program,” said Stevenson Athletic Director Trish Betthauser. “Her playing accolades speak for themselves, but her maturity, insight, and ability to connect with others are attributes that are not only impressive, but exciting! I’m looking forward to working with her and our athletes as we prepare for our upcoming season.”

Kiven will be joined on staff by longtime assistant coach, Jerry Franklin, and two new assistant coaches, Gregg Winter and Melinda Fitzgibbons. Tryouts for all grades begin Monday, Aug. 12, and there is a parent meeting scheduled for 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15 in the East Glass Commons.
