Two Seniors Named Siemens Semifinalists
October 22, 2012
Stevenson High School seniors Rohan Dasika and Rahul Maramreddy on Friday were named
semifinalists in the 2012 Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology, the nation’s premier research competition for high school students. The Buffalo Grove residents are among 322 semifinalists nationwide, and 11 from Illinois. Maramreddy and Dasika are the only semifinalists from Lake County.
They submitted a modified version of their SPARK project about hydrogen fuel cell use in homes. (The project is shown below.) Their research was conducted during the summer at Northern Illinois University under the mentorship of Dr. Pradip Majumdar. SPARK — which stands for STEM Professionals As Resource Knowledge — is a program that helps Stevenson students entering their junior and senior years get summer internships and job-shadowing opportunities.
Semifinalists do not advance further in the Siemens competition. Ninety-three students were selected as regional finalists; they will compete in regional competitions in November. The Siemens national winners will be announced December 4. The only regional finalists from Illinois are two students from Evanston Township High School.
