Library Collection
Books
The collection contains approximately 45,000 volumes. There is a special collection of books on Adlai E. Stevenson. Books are accessible through our Destiny on-line book catalog.
Magazines
There are over 250 print magazine titles in our holdings. It includes many popular titles plus some special collections such as National Geographic from 1911 to the present, as well as some copies of Life from the thirties. A current magazine subscription list is available at the circulation desk. In addition, we provide access to many more magazines and journals through online services such as Ebsco, Proquest, JStor and others (see "Magazines, Academic Journals... under Databases by Subject). Look for title lists in the various databases services to see which magazines are offered and their coverage dates.
Newspapers
There are 6 papers kept in hard copy for two months. These include USA Today, Chicago Sun Times, Chicago Tribune, The Daily Herald, The Lincolnshire Review, The Buffalo Grove Countryside, and The Deerfield Review. Regional, national, and international newspapers are also available online in Ebsco, Proquest and Newsbank, (including the Chicagoland Newspaper collection providing full-text of local papers.) Look for title lists in the various databases services to see which newspapers are offered and their coverage dates. A deep newspaper archive of nine U.S. papers, (including the Chicago Tribune and the New York Times) are available in the Proquest Historical Newspapers, going back to the mid 1800s. There are also other selected newspapers on microform going back to 1763.
Online Subscription Database Services
The library provides a wealth of information through online subscription services. These databases provide access to reference books, magazines, newspapers and other information from reliable, known print publishers and news agencies. They are directly accessed from any computer in the building via the library pages and provide a virtual library for all students and staff. They are also accessible from home using remote access login and password. A description of these database services and their remote access information is also available from the library.
Stevenson Archives
The archives are a collection of materials and memorabilia related to the history of Stevenson High School and its community. These are kept separately from the regular collection in the archive office within the library. Marianne Johnson (x4359) serves as our archivist. Archive materials must be used on-site and may not leave the library.
