Art Department Highlights Landscape Artist

August 29, 2012

Landscape artist Donna Sands is SHS Art Department’s Visiting Artist of the Month for September. Samples of her work will be on display in the Rotunda Gallery of the West Building, and she will visit the school to meet with art students.

The Libertyville-based Sands, who has been a professional painter for nearly years, also was the Visiting Artist of the Month in January 2010.

"I prefer to paint the unaltered, rugged terrain rather than the well-kept garden or park," she wrote on her website, www.dsandsart.com. "My ongoing exploration allows me to share wondrous vistas that explode with color on my surfaces, while taking the viewer on a journey into the countryside. All is right in my world when I am involved in capturing an image on canvas."

Before pursuing her lifelong passion full time, Sands operated her own business. For more than a dozen years, she was the art director for a group of freelance designers, illustrators and photographers. Sands worked in the commercial art field for 21 years after graduating from Northeastern Illinois University in 1979.

She is the past curator of the Deer Path Gallery in Lake Forest. Sands serves on the Cultural Board at the College of Lake County, and has served on the boards of the Deer Path Art League and the Lake County Art League.
