Principal John Carter

Dr. John Carter became the 10th principal of Stevenson High School on June 8, 2010. Carter, 44, previously served as the school’s assistant principal for teaching and learning. He first came to Stevenson in 1993 as a mathematics teacher. After one year, he left to become the director of mathematics at West Chicago High School, where he had taught prior to joining SHS. Carter returned to Stevenson in 2000, and was elevated to director of mathematics a year later. He led Stevenson’s mathematics division until assuming the assistant principal's post in 2006.

Carter brings a broad spectrum of experience to the principal’s post. As a mathematics educator, he excelled inside and outside the classroom. In 1993, Carter received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching and also won the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ top honor. Carter also was active in national mathematics circles, serving on the board of directors of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and its Illinois affiliate. He has played a major role in NCTM’s curriculum and teaching reform efforts over the past decade. Carter is a lead author of the Glencoe K-12 mathematics program and co-author of more than 20 mathematics textbooks.

As assistant principal for teaching and learning, Carter led several school initiatives. He was instrumental in training faculty and staff how to use student assessment data to improve their teaching efforts. He worked closely with the junior high school districts that send students to Stevenson, to ensure students entering ninth grade are well prepared for the high school’s rigorous curriculum. Carter also oversaw the school’s Advanced Placement testing program, which has had a record numbers of students in each of the past three years, and worked with Gonzalez to guide the mentoring of second-year teachers.
